Dr Turgut Durduran is a group leader at ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Castelldefels, Spain. He leads the "medical optics" group which develops diffuse optical technologies for use in clinical settings. The group has national and international collaborations and works with hospitals and bio-medical research centers to test the utility of these technologies in a wide-range of applications ranging from neurology to oncology.
Before coming to Spain, Dr Durduran was a research faculty at the University Of Pennsylvania (UPENN), Philadelphia, USA. He still continues to collaborate with researchers at UPENN and holds an adjuct professorship at the Department of Radiology.
His interest in pediatric populations originates from his collaborative projects with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) where they have introduced the then newly developed diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) technique for the studies of the cerebral wellbeing of premature born infants and neonates born with severe congenital heart defects requiring major corrective heart surgeries.
